Like the other guys I've just put my bike through a service to make sure it is fully fettled for the trip. Unlike the other rest of the team I haven't bought a shiny new machine for the ride, instead I'm relying on my trusty Dawes Galaxy to eat up the miles. I got it refurbished after Christmas and since then have done all the training rides and commuting to and from work on it. As part of the service I went for narrower tyres, the 28 mm I was riding were nice and comfortable but a bit slow and I can get 700 x 25 on the same rims. Anyway when the shop pumped up the new tyre on the front wheel the rims buckled. All the braking had taken it toll and thinned the rim so much it just gave up. End result one very shiny, and expensive, new front wheel. Still, a better outcome than the whole thing falling apart on a 30 mph descent.
So took the newly serviced bike with its go faster tyres out for a quick spin yesterday morning. Felt faster, which could be self delusion on my part, but certainly the new tyres make sure any bumps in the road get transmitted more efficiently to sensitive areas.........
Now the bike is in top condition I'm just waiting for the new legs to arrive before Friday.
